Structure of cholesterol helical ribbons and self-assembling biological springs.
We report the results of x-ray-scattering studies of individual helical ribbons formed in multicomponent solutions of cholesterol solubilized by various surfactants. The solutions were chemically defined lipid concentrate (CDLC) and model bile. In these and many analogous multicomponent surfactant-cholesterol solutions, helical ribbons of two well defined pitch angles, namely 11 degrees and 54 ...
متن کاملIsotropic-nematic transition and cholesteric phases of helical Yukawa rods.
We present a Monte Carlo simulation study of helical Yukawa rods as a model for chiral liquid crystal mesogens. To simulate the cholesteric phase, we introduce a new simulation method that uses soft walls and self-determined boundary conditions. We observe that the isotropic-nematic phase transition is shifted to lower volume fractions with decreasing salt concentration as well as with increasi...
متن کاملA helical naphthopyran dopant for photoresponsive cholesteric liquid crystals.
The first photoresponsive cholesteric liquid crystal comprising a photoisomerizable helical naphthopyran derivative dopant and a nematic liquid crystal is reported. An unprecedented helical twisting power switching ratio of over 90% allowed us to demonstrate multi-cycle rotational motion of micro-objects by UV light irradiation.
متن کاملA biological system producing a self-assembling cholesteric protein liquid crystal.
The protein in the oothecal glands of praying mantids (Sphodromantis tenuidentata, Miomantis monacha) exists in the form of lamellar liquid crystalline spherulites, which coalesce as they flow out of a punctured gland tubule. Electron micrographs of sections of these spherulites after fixation show parabolic patterns of an electron-light component, set in a continuous matrix of protein. Such pa...
متن کاملThe Origin of the Helical Twist Inversion in Single Component Cholesteric Liquid Crystals*
The cholesteric twist inversion by temperature variation of a single component thermotropic liquid crystalline system was experimentally investigated and is explained by the partial twisting power model, evaluating the temperature dependent pitch of five different configurations of a benzoic acid biphenyl ester with two chiral centers. The temperature dependence of the twisting power and the ch...
